Hilda Vandergriff

Artist Biography
Hilda was raised in the California San Joaquin Valley. This region is noted for its farming and agriculture and has greatly influenced her work. Her art career began after retiring as a high school secretary. At this time she discovered she had a knack for drawing and began to take some art classes and workshops. She soon developed an insatiable desire to learn and get better, and began to take classes in Chinese calligraphy.

She was introduced to eastern style painting five years ago, and this continues to be her passion. She often switches from one medium to another. Her watercolor paintings are very colorful and unique, and are very different from her Suminigashi or Chinese Brush paintings.

Hilda shares her art at charitable events and organizations, donating some of her original work to their causes. She participates in national juried shows and local competitions and has won many awards for her efforts. Animals are especially dear to her heart. Her admiration for cats is evident. Her keen eye allows her to incorporate her unique style into her feline series. She looks for beauty in all her subject matter that ultimately will translate into a cherished piece of artwork.

Hilda is active with the local community art scene at Arts Visalia once a week helping with correspondence. She also participates in the annual Open Studio Art Tour for the Central Coast North County sponsored by ARTS Obispo.
